A convenient online companion for teaching math skills! This convenient online course consists of 7 modules that help students develop math skills in two ways: through practice and repetition, and through interactive learning. Developed to work with Math for Clinical Practice, this learning tool lets students read chapter content, then apply and practice what they have learned. Students can set their own pace and even work independently outside of the classroom.

Features include:

  • A unique systematic approach links mathematical principles to the written prescription and the medication sent by the pharmacy. Examples use a UNIQUE step-by-step format:
    • Prescription - what is written on the patient's chart, incorporating current JCAHO and ISMP recommendations.
    • What you HAVE - what would be sent up from the pharmacy or a description of what will be on hand.
    • What you KNOW - a breakdown of the prescription and information found in the patient's chart and/or from the drug insert or pharmacist, needed for the calculation.
    • What you WANT - identifies the missing information that must be found.
    • Critical Thinking - the thought process that needs to occur to perform the calculation. This systematic approach uses information from the patient's chart, the medication sent from the pharmacy, and math skills. This section is intended to strengthen math calculation in the clinical setting.
    • Answer for Best Care - a step-by-step calculation which follows the items outlined in critical thinking, showing how to do the problem not just the math calculation.
    • Human Error Check boxes review how to check specific calculations to see if the calculation answer is correct.
    • Does your answer fit the general guideline? - checks to see if the answer fits into acceptable clinical and scientific parameters. This is a step that should be carried out in the clinical setting.
  • Clinical Alert boxes present information on creating the best practice care. Safety Alert boxes identify issues that may lead to medication errors.
  • Human Error Alert boxes identify common mistakes that can lead to incorrect drug calculations, enhancing the student's ability to troubleshoot calculations in the clinical setting.
  • Each module is organized by topic sections that include an overview, objectives, a reading assignment, example problems, practice problems, and a quiz.
  • All of the math practice problems include a tutorial for each of the two drug calculation methods (ratio-proportion and formula). When one of the solution buttons is chosen, a step-by-step tutorial to solving the problem in the method chosen is initiated for the student to view.
