Module 9 Introduction
Before you begin working with a type of payer, I want to tell you more about what you can expect. In this part of your externship, you will first work with
TRICARE and CHAMPVA claims. Then, you will work with a
workers' compensation claim. Finally, you will work with two types of
disability income insurance claims.
By the time you have completed all three of these categories of claims, you should be able to do the following things:
- Comprehend TRICARE and the programs available under it.
- Complete a CMS-1500 form for a TRICARE Standard claim.
- Understand
eligibility and enrollment requirements under CHAMPVA.
- Complete a CMS-1500 form for a CHAMPVA claim.
- Understand the role of workers' compensation in the workplace.
- Complete a CMS-1500 form for a workers' compensation claim.
- Differentiate among federal, state, and private disability insurance.
- Comprehend the procedure for filing disability claims.
- Complete a CMS-1500 form for a disability income insurance claim.
- Consider legal issues involved in processing these types of claims.

Before you go any further, you'll need to
go to your textbook and read Chapter 14, which covers TRICARE and CHAMPVA. In addition, you will need to
read Chapter 15, which deals with workers' compensation. Finally, you will also need to
read Chapter 16, which covers disability income insurance and disability benefit programs. Although specific sections and page numbers will be referenced as you progress through the claims, it is important that you read and study these chapters before beginning to work through the process. In addition, it is a good idea for you to complete the corresponding workbook pages to ensure a thorough understanding of the material.
