The main focus of your externship today was the following concepts and information:
  • TRICARE is the military's comprehensive health care program for active duty personnel, eligible family members, retirees and family members under the age of 65, and all survivors of all Uniformed Services.
  • There are three different programs under TRICARE:
    1. TRICARE Standard
    2. TRICARE Extra
    3. TRICARE Prime
  • Individuals eligible for any of the TRICARE programs include the following:
    1. Eligible family members of active-duty service members
    2. Military retirees and their eligible family members
    3. Surviving eligible family members of deceased active or retired service members
    4. Wards and pre-adoptive children
    5. Some former spouses of active or retired service members who meet certain length-of-marriage rules and other requirements.
  • TRICARE deductibles and copayments vary with the individual program and status of the eligible beneficiary.
  • CHAMPVA is the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • CHAMPVA provides coverage to the spouse or widow(er) and to the children of a veteran when certain conditions are met.
  • There is an annual deductible for CHAMPVA, as well as a cost-share, or copayment.
  • All CHAMPVA claims are sent directly to CHAMPVA in Denver, CO.
